Storing turnips for the winter - how to keep turnips fresh, juicy and healthy.
Our ancestors did not have a question about what to do with turnips. Previously, it was a frequently consumed vegetable in Russia, but now it is unfairly forgotten. The reason is the appearance of potatoes, which cook faster. But fresh, juicy turnips are healthier for us than potatoes. It does not make you fat - it is a low-calorie product and a good way to rid the body of toxins.
But this is not the property that made the root vegetable famous: it contains an element such as glucoraphanin, which has anti-cancer properties. Turnip juice is an excellent cure for coughs and sore throats.
How to store turnips at home in order to maximize the beneficial properties of the root vegetable for the winter?
After digging, you need to let it sit for 2-3 weeks, sort through and tear off the leaves.
Next, let's prepare the storage container. You can use tubs, barrels or boxes.
Dry it, sprinkle the bottom with dry sand, put a layer of turnips on it, then another layer of sand and alternate until the container is full. The top layer must certainly be a layer of sand.
Our preparations for the winter must, of course, be stored in a cool basement. But not all cellars are suitable for this purpose: it should not be very damp - the vegetable may rot, and not very dry - it will wither.
Knowing how to preserve turnips for the winter and observing the listed conditions, you can use them to prepare salads, casseroles, soups, stews, side dishes for meat and fish all winter long.
