Where and how to properly store quince for the winter

First, you need to remember that quince fruits should be picked very carefully from the tree. Those fruits that have fallen or have some kind of flaw are not suitable for long-term storage. They can be cut immediately and placed in the freezer. You can also freeze quince puree, made from boiled and blended fruit. When making quince preparations, you can use another, more “tasty” method: cook from the fruit compote, jam or jam, do candied fruit, dry And so on.

Selected specimens will be suitable for use for quite a long time, if you take into account several important nuances.

  1. It is best to store a large amount of quince in a cellar or basement, because these fruits love the cold. If there are few of them, then a refrigerator is also suitable for preserving the freshness of fruits.
  2. It’s great if there are wooden boxes with partitions for storing quinces.In order to prevent the fruits from “touching” each other, they should be sprinkled with sand (sawdust or dry grass) or wrapped each in paper.
  3. The proximity of apples does not in any way affect the quality of the quince.
  4. On the contrary, pears have the ability to speed up the ripening process of quince, in which case it will rot faster.
  5. Polyethylene is considered a possible “storage place” for quince, but it is better to choose cling film rather than a bag to prevent air accumulation and condensation.
  6. Ripe quince “does not like” a bright (sunny) room.

By following all the necessary rules, you can enjoy the miraculous fruit until spring.

Optimal conditions for storing quince

The most ideal place to preserve the freshness of fruits is the refrigerator compartment. But, naturally, it is not suitable for a large quince harvest. These fruits are very sensitive to temperature. If it’s warm, then their juiciness “disappears” quickly.

In the case where it is possible to provide the quince with a temperature regime:

  • from 0 to +1°C, then the fruits will be suitable for consumption for 4 months;
  • from 0 to +4°С – for 2 months;
  • from +4 to +8°С – for 1 month;
  • from +8°C and above (usually room temperature) – for 3 weeks.

Quince can be stored in the freezer for more than 7-9 months. In addition, under such conditions it acquires a pronounced rich taste. It is better not to re-freeze. The cut fruit can last in the refrigerator for several days; it should be wrapped in cling film.

If you are very careful about storing quince for the winter at home, then the room with fruit must be ventilated frequently.Before placing the fruit in the right place, it must be quartzed and ensure optimal humidity during storage (80 %).

With a little effort, ripe, juicy quince in winter will not be something unattainable.
