How to store vodka: where, in what and under what conditions

Categories: How to store

The chemical composition of vodka is quite simple, which is why storing it is not at all difficult. But still it deteriorates: it absorbs different odors, loses strength and quality.

To prevent this from happening with vodka, you need to follow several important recommendations from experts in this field.

Under what conditions should vodka be stored?

To begin with, it is important to emphasize that only a high-quality product can be stored for a long time and be suitable for consumption. After purchasing the “right” vodka, you need to take care of:

  • so that light does not enter the place where the alcoholic drink will be stored, otherwise the composition of the product will change under its influence, and this will give it an unpleasant aftertaste;
  • so that the air humidity in the room with vodka does not exceed 85%;
  • so that the temperature regime is not lower than +5 °C and not higher than +20 °C.

Vodka can be stored for the longest time in a glass container. This material does not react with alcohol, as a result, the taste of the drink remains the same for a long time. It is important that the bottle or other container is hermetically sealed. Otherwise, the alcohol vapor will quickly evaporate, making the drink no longer as strong as before. Whatever the storage conditions for vodka, it still needs to be checked periodically.Drinks with sediment or discoloration should not be consumed. But it is still possible to use vodka as a raw material for compresses and rubs.

The shelf life of vodka in a bottle also depends on its position. If it is positioned vertically, the drink can be used longer. When vodka is constantly in contact with the cork, it absorbs synthetic substances, and this changes its taste.

Vodka shelf life

Many people believe that expensive vodka can last much longer than cheap vodka. But even a luxury drink cannot be stored for more than 5 years. Afterwards, it will begin to produce harmful toxic elements. When storing vodka under the right conditions, it should be consumed within 1 or 2 years. It all depends on the quality of the alcohol and storage conditions. Vodka tinctures are suitable for a whole year, but it is best if consumed within six months.

Rules for storing vodka in open containers

Naturally, you cannot store an open bottle of vodka. After 3 months it will no longer be suitable. And it doesn’t matter how the cork is plugged. But if you twist it (a thin piece of polyethylene can serve as a seal) not too tightly, this term will be much smaller. There should be no neighbors with a strong odor near an open alcoholic drink. The refrigerator will also not help extend the shelf life of the product, since air entering the container “destroys the quality of vodka.”

Storing vodka in cold conditions

The refrigerator shelf is considered the most appropriate place to store an alcoholic drink. It is not advisable to store the product in the freezer, because you cannot be sure that it will not freeze or its components will not begin to crystallize (this will cause sediment to form).After all, the manufacturer does not always honestly prescribe the exact composition of vodka on the container.

Often the freezer is used only to cool the drink faster.

Containers in which vodka should not be stored

The fact that glass is considered the best container for storing vodka has already been mentioned. In addition, many people store the product in plastic bottles. It is not right. After prolonged interaction, vodka and plastic form substances hazardous to human health. They can cause serious poisoning of the body. In addition, as a result of such storage, sediment will appear at the bottom, and the taste of vodka will change for the worse. Therefore, purchased vodka in a plastic container should be immediately poured into a glass container and screwed tightly. Aluminum containers are also not suitable.

You cannot use polymer cups for alcoholic drinks (toxins are instantly formed from the interaction of the polymer material with vodka).

You cannot store vodka for more than 3 days in the flask in which it is usually transported. It will acquire a metallic aftertaste.
