How to store oak acorns until spring
Most often, acorns are stored for future planting in the spring. But there are such “fine” gourmets who consume some of their species as food, as legumes or instead of coffee (in ground form). You can also store dried acorns for crafts.
When sending acorns for storage, they must be carefully sorted and dried in a clean, ventilated area that is not heated, or under a canopy. You can also save them here in winter, spreading them out in a layer of 10-15 cm.

Features of storing acorns
When the first frosty days arrive, sorted, high-quality oak fruits can be stored: small batches will fit in the refrigerator, but large batches will need a trench or even an acorn plant. Some people use running water for this, immersing bags of acorns at the bottom of the reservoir.
The biggest problem faced when storing acorns is mold. But if oak fruits are properly dried and preserved, they can be kept in excellent condition until spring.

How to Store Huge Batch of Acorns
In the trenches
To do this, select an elevated, dry place and dig a long depression with a height of 1.3 to 1.7 m and a width of 1 meter. It all depends on how much the soil can freeze in certain regions.Acorns should be placed in “not high” layers and each should be sprinkled with sand, and covered with earth on top. Every 2 meters it is necessary to insert special tubes made of wood or metal in order to be able to measure the temperature through them. If the readings turn out to be lower than 3 °C, the trench must be insulated, for example, with fallen leaves, and when the acorns “get hot,” the soil cover can be reduced.
Under the snow
This method is suitable for those regions where snow remains stable on the surface of the earth throughout the winter. To do this, you need to clear the area and sprinkle oak fruits on it (100 kg per 1 m2), the next ball should snow (the optimal thickness of the cover is 20 cm). Then, the entire “structure” must be covered with dry leaves.
Important nuances when storing acorns
People with experience in this matter say that if you prevent mold from appearing on oak fruits, they are excellent for planting in the spring and, if anyone dares, for eating. Therefore, all important recommendations must be followed.
- The optimal temperature of a refrigeration device for storing acorns is considered to be from 0 to -2 ° C (although this mark is not suitable for all products in the refrigerator, so it may be a little higher, towards the plus side). The coldest place in the cabinet is the bottom shelves.
- Before sending acorns for storage, they should be immersed in a solution of potassium permanganate for 3 minutes to disinfect. It should be rich and have a bright red hue (like wine).
Each method allows you to properly preserve oak planting material or the original ingredient of a dish until the right moment.

It is not always necessary to store acorns for planting; if you plan to make all kinds of crafts from acorns, then it is best to dry them. See video: Harvesting natural materials. Drying and storage. Acorns and chestnuts.
