What is the best way to store hyacinth after it blooms?
After the hyacinths fade, their bulbs must be stored until the next season. This process is quite labor-intensive, but in order to successfully grow a flower, annual summer digging of the bulbs after the leaves die is mandatory.
In addition, after digging it will be possible to inspect the bulbs. Some of them will have to be thrown away, while the rest should be treated for preventive purposes against various diseases and protection against parasites.
Preparing hyacinth bulbs for storage
Planting material for a flowering plant must be removed from the ground at the end of June or beginning of July. Just after the foliage begins to turn yellow. This period should not be missed, as later it will become almost impossible to find exactly where in the soil the bulbs are located. The foliage is the so-called landmark of where the hyacinth grew. If the flower is not dug up, it will stop blooming because the roots will grow deep into the soil.
How to properly store hyacinth bulbs at home
Saving flower planting material is a very important point. Since during storage, inflorescences appear in the bulbs. If something is done wrong, the hyacinth will not be able to please you with abundant flowering. In total, the storage process takes approximately 95 days.

After digging, hyacinth bulbs must be ventilated and dried. It is best to do this in a place where it is dark, with temperatures within 20 ° C. This will take from five days to 1 week.
After this, they must be cleared of soil and root residues. Having sorted the bulbs, the planting material should be folded into boxes in no more than two layers. There is no need to separate small shoots. If the number of bulbs is small, then labeled paper bags are ideal for storing them.
Subsequent storage of the bulbs can be divided into two stages.
- For the first 2 months, the planting material must be provided with room conditions with a temperature of 25-26 °C.
- The second stage is called pre-planting. It lasts for 30 days. During this period, the bulbs need average humidity (if too low they can dry out) and a temperature of 17-18 ° C.
Care must be taken to ensure that the room where hyacinth planting material will be stored is well ventilated.
