Proper storage of fresh peas with pods (as well as without them) and compliance with all important nuances when preserving a dry product will allow you to use it for a long time to prepare various delicacies.

Subtleties of storing dried peas

Having purchased dried peas, you need to remember several necessary nuances that are important during storage of the product:

  • the place for storing it should be as dark as possible, sufficiently ventilated and with minimal air humidity;
  • storage containers can be almost anything: glass jars, trays, linen bags, etc.;
  • when storing dry peas, you can use a little trick: place a homemade small fabric bag with salt in the container with the product - this will allow the product not to spoil for a long time and maintain its structure;
  • Before saving, you need to make sure that the peas are absolutely dry and crumbly; even a little moisture will lead to the development of mold, rot and the appearance of parasites;
  • if the purchased peas were in a sealed container, after opening they must be poured into a container that also closes tightly;
  • It is wrong if peas are stored on a shelf that is located near the stove, because of the constant warm air they will very quickly become unusable;
  • From time to time, peas that are stored should be inspected for the presence of rot and mold; also, if you notice an unpleasant odor from the product, it is best to throw it away.

It is worth noting that if you dry peas yourself, then only ripe peas are suitable for storage: overripe ones will turn out to be very hard, and slightly greenish ones will not be very pleasant to the taste.

Subtleties of storing fresh peas

The most common ways to save fresh peas for the winter are: canning, freezing and drying.

Canning peas, you can save money and not buy it in stores. There are many ways to do this. Here is one that has been tested:

Freeze peas very simple. You just need to remove it from the pods, place it in a special freezer bag or container, and put it in the freezer.

Drying peas you can do it yourself. To do this, it is best to pre-boil it in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, dry it a little and then put it in the oven for several hours. The device temperature should be 60 °C.

Shelf life of dry and green peas

The necessary information about storing purchased dried peas must be on the packaging. Naturally, it must be taken into account. Fresh peas removed from the pods cannot be stored for a long time, so after a few days you need to decide which way to save them.

There are certain time limits for how long peas in one form or another should be preserved, and we must not forget about them:

  • fresh green peas in the middle of the pods can be stored for up to 1 week (without natural packaging they are good for longer);
  • frozen product (in pods or not) can be kept in a freezer and can be eaten for 10 months;
  • freshly harvested green peas, separated from the pods, can be stored for longer than six months, but for this they need enough air and reliable shelter from direct exposure to the sun;
  • canned peas can be stored for 12 months (the period can be longer than several years), the main thing is to follow all the rules when “twisting”;
  • dry peas can be stored for years, but it is better to eat them within 1 year.

When storing peas at home, you need to remember the most important thing - they “don’t like” humidity.
