Properly organized storage of oats at home using one of the suitable methods will allow you to have high-quality grain in stock for a long time.

How to properly organize saving oats at home

The most important condition for oats to be stored well for a long time is certain humidity parameters. That is, when sending grain for storage, it must first be properly dried so that it does not cake in the future. Oats that are not dry enough may begin to heat up and burn. Therefore, low thermometer readings are also suitable for storing oats.

Hermetically sealed containers of oats should be opened from time to time to check the condition of the product. Otherwise, compacted (wet) oats may begin to sprout.

It is best to store this grain crop in fabric (made of natural material) bags. This is a little inconvenient due to the fact that oats from such a package can spill out (through abrasions). In addition, this method cannot be called aesthetic, and if you save a bag of oats in the apartment, then it will also be difficult to find a place for it.

A solution to this kind of inconvenience can be a three-chamber container with glass doors. It can also serve as a stand for a home mill. More than 10 kg of oats can be packed into such storage. If there is a lot of grain, then a pantry is best for storing it. There is also a “convenient design” for storing grain products - special homemade bags. They are mounted on the wall and opened from below.

Several ways to store oats

Large volumes of oats intended for domestic animals are best stored in properly equipped room. Its walls must be lined with iron from the inside, and the floors must be concreted. In such a structure it is stored in bulk. Periodically, the oats need to be inspected and ensure that they are not wet and insects do not live in them.

For a small amount of grain crop, you can purchase or build it yourself locker boxes from beams and boards. The outer part of such a device should be covered with tin, the top of the box should have a lid that will protect the oats from rodents. It must be placed on stands. Otherwise, the bottom ball of grain will draw moisture from the floor.

Before sending for storage, oats must be thoroughly disinfected (only when they are for animal feeding) in order to destroy mold spores and protect them from insects.

You can also use oats to save wooden barrels with tight-fitting lids. Having chosen any of the proposed methods of saving oats for a long period, you must remember that place for storing it must be well ventilated and closed. Otherwise, the grain will become sour and cannot be eaten by either people or animals.

Oats for food and economic purposes can be stored for up to 6 years, and its shelf life as planting material is no more than 14 months.

How to store oats intended for sprouting

Those who sprout oats for food should remember that they cannot be cooked, that is, steamed, fried, or dried. All of these processes can extend the shelf life of grain crops, but they reduce its beneficial properties.

As oats germinate, they “accumulate” the greatest amount of vitamin elements. Its use has a positive effect on human health. Grain that is planned to be germinated should be stored in dry glass jars, without closing them with a tight lid, but covering them with gauze or any natural cloth. This way, the oats will be able to “breathe” oxygen. You can also choose canvas bags for this.

Already sprouted oats should be stored in the refrigerator compartment for no more than 1 week. The container with the product should be covered with a damp gauze cloth.
