What is the best way to store peonies?
Many gardeners wonder whether it is necessary to dig up a peony bush for the winter. And some gardeners, having bought plant seedlings, at the end of summer are not sure that they will “survive” until spring. Many questions arise about storing a peony bouquet in a vase.
All these points are very easy to solve if you familiarize yourself with some rules and do not miss a single important detail.
How can you store peony planting material?
Before sending peony roots for storage before planting, they should be carefully inspected. All areas that show signs of rot must be removed with a sharp knife. Each damaged area must be treated with any antiseptic (brilliant, fungicide, etc.).
In the room where the peony planting material will be stored, the thermometer readings should range from +2 °C to +4 °C. The optimal storage place is considered to be a cellar; in its absence, the same conditions for flowers can be provided in the refrigerator on the vegetable shelf. If the rhizomes of the plant are placed in boxes, they must be sprinkled with dry sawdust.
Peonies wrapped in sphagnum moss can be stored in a plastic bag, in which holes must first be made (to allow air circulation). From time to time you need to look into the packaging of future flowers and check their condition. The rhizomes should not be allowed to dry out; to do this, you can periodically moisten the moss a little.
If the buds swell ahead of schedule, they should be planted in a pot with moistened soil and the plant should be sent to a cool room before planting in open ground. Peony roots can also be stored in pre-washed sand (it must be moistened from time to time) and stored at temperatures up to +10 °C.

How to store a peony bouquet
In order for the composition with peonies to be stored as long as possible, they must be cut correctly. Flower buds should not be too hard to the touch. This plant does not yet have a pronounced color. Before putting peonies in a vase, they should be sent to a cool, dark place so that they “come to life” a little.
Bacteria will not develop in water (if taken from the tap, it must be settled) if you use a dark glass container. In addition, peonies (their stems) must be washed with a solution of water and potassium permanganate to disinfect them before placing them in a vase.
You can extend the life of a peony in a vase by removing the lower leaves of the stem. The stem cuts should be oblique. They need to be updated periodically to make it easier for them to “swallow” water.
You cannot leave a vase of peonies on the windowsill; it is better to choose a cooler place where the sun's rays cannot penetrate. It is advisable to change the water for flowers every day. Peonies do not like being next to other flowers; this makes them fade faster.
If you provide the right conditions for storing a peony bouquet, it will be able to have an aesthetic appearance for a fairly long period (from two to two and a half weeks).
