How to properly store feathers and down

Categories: How to store

At home, rarely does anyone store feathers and down. But there are people who sell it or make their own, for example, pillows.

Therefore, the issue of storing feathers and down is still quite relevant. It is very important to maintain the necessary conditions during the conservation of these raw materials.

Proper storage of feathers and down

At first, the selected feathers and down should be dried in the open air under sunlight, which can kill various types of bacteria. This process will take from 4 days to 1 week.

Naturally, it is unrealistic to simply lay feathers and down on something and dry them. These raw materials must be packaged in gauze bags and hung on a wire. In order to dry evenly, feathers and down should be mixed every day. This procedure is reminiscent of vigorously shaking down pillows. Afterwards, they need to be sent to the line to dry again.

Dried feathers or fluff must be transferred from small gauze bags to bulk bags sewn from natural fabric (preferably linen). Then, the raw materials can be stored in a closed, dry room with good air circulation.

Down and feathers will be stored better if you mix, ventilate and dry the raw materials monthly. These processes will require an outdoor location. If feathers and down are planned to be stored for longer than a year or two, then it is advisable to open the bags from time to time in order to remove spoiled raw materials.

You can increase the shelf life of feathers and down by putting a couple of cloves of young garlic without peels or a few pieces of laundry soap in their bag. It is still recommended to give preference to garlic, the smell of which quickly disappears; in contrast, soap has a more persistent aroma, and feathers and down have the ability to absorb similar aromas.
