Preserving flower planting material until spring is not at all difficult; it is only important to follow a few recommendations from experts in this field.

How to properly prepare bulbs for storage

You cannot do without proper preparation of flower planting material, because it is the key to successful storage.

After “careful” digging (this process is very important, otherwise the future plant can be damaged), the tubers should dry in a shaded, ventilated place.

Before sending the bulbs for storage, each of them must be inspected so as not to leave among the “healthy” specimens infected or damaged in any way. Such tubers can also be stored, but, firstly, separately, and, secondly, they need to be cleaned and treated with a fungicidal agent. The places where the cut was made must be burned with brilliant green or sprinkled with cinnamon or crushed coals.

Rules for storing bulbs in a refrigeration device

This storage option is the most convenient. By placing the flower bulbs in the lower compartment, you can be sure that they are not in danger. They feel great at temperatures from +3 to +5 ° C (the same as on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator). You can store the bulbs in perforated bags, seedling pots, containers that do not close hermetically, or in fabric bags. The planting material must be sprinkled with peat on top; it should be slightly damp.

During storage, the bulbs should be checked periodically to ensure that they remain firm, not moldy, and that the peat is always moist.

Can be stored in the refrigerator: iris, lily, peony, hosta, bergenia, volzhanka, daylily, lily of the valley, astilbe, gladiolus, anemone, tigridia, hyacinth.

Do not store in a refrigeration device: mallow, primrose, aquilegia, perennial aster, eryngium, yarrow.

Rules for storing bulbs in the basement

Those who have a cellar do not have to worry about storing bulbous flowers until spring, because in this place it is easiest to achieve the right conditions. The main thing is to make sure that frost cannot get into the room. The optimal temperature for saving flower planting material is a thermometer reading from 0 to +5 °C. There is no question of mold and mildew. The “correct” air humidity in such a room is considered to be no lower than 75%. Also, the cellar should be dark and well ventilated.

The bulbs should be placed in cardboard boxes. Between each ball you need to have dry sand, vermiculite or sawdust.

Rules for storing bulbs on the balcony

If there is no cellar or even a small bag of bulbs does not fit in the refrigerator, you can use a glassed-in loggia or terrace to store them. The main thing is that the temperature on the balcony does not fall below 0 °C.Prepared planting material must be planted in pots with moist soil. There is no need to water future plants during storage. You just need to periodically ventilate the balcony and moisten the soil in the pots. For convenience, you should use a spray bottle. You need to spray the top dried ball of soil with it.

It doesn’t matter which method you choose, it’s only important to follow all the recommendations from experienced flower growers. Then one hundred percent you can enjoy the colorful, lush flower bed near the house.
