How to properly store dry ice at home

But those who often use dry ice must be aware of the rules for storing it at home and at the same time follow all precautions. After all, during its evaporation, carbon dioxide is formed, a large amount of which can cause enormous harm to human health.

In what container is it customary to store dry ice?

If you plan to purchase such a coolant, then you must know in which container to store it correctly. The best option in this case is a special container.

It is made from metal that does not rust or from polymer that is impact resistant. Its inner side is covered with fine-pored foam. Such a simple device allows you to store the coolant for quite a long time, even when it is too warm around it.

But it is not always possible to purchase such a container. Then, instead, you can use a small refrigerator (usually travelers use these) or make a similar container yourself.

You can also make a container for storing dry ice from the materials you have on hand (cardboard that has a corrugated surface, polystyrene foam, polystyrene foam).The inside of the cardboard box must be lined with some kind of heat insulator. It is very important that the foam pieces fit snugly against each other. Thus, their joints will be as airtight as possible. To definitely achieve this goal, you can use a sealant.

In order to increase the duration of storage of dry ice in a container made by yourself, you first need to tightly cover the container using penoplex, and only then attach a lid to this material.

To store dry ice, you need to choose a dark room with good air circulation and low thermometer readings. The balcony can be used for this purpose only when it is cold outside.

It is best to use a shed or attic to save coolant. In this case, the basement is not considered a suitable place; there is high humidity and poor air ventilation. A small closed space is also unacceptable: after the formation of an increased concentration of gas, the environment in that place is unsafe for human health.

As for the freezer, its temperature indicators are not suitable for storing dry ice. In addition, this device does not have a ventilation outlet for carbon dioxide.

An airtight, durable container is also not suitable for storing carbon dioxide. A high concentration of carbon dioxide may cause the container to explode. Under no circumstances should children or pets have access to the dry ice container.

Dry ice should be transported and stored with extreme caution. This is a very responsible and serious moment, since it is not at all safe for others.
