Preserving almonds at home is not at all difficult, the main thing is to first choose them correctly, and then carefully follow the recommendations of specialists.

Signs that indicate quality almonds

Not all almonds can be stored for a long time. It all depends on its quality. To correctly determine whether a product is fresh or not, you need to know several nuances:

  • the shape of the nuts should be perfect and the color uniform; Traces of rust, much less mold, are naturally out of the question;
  • a high-quality product gives off a barely perceptible, that is, faintly expressed aroma, without bitterness;
  • You should not buy dried out and damp almonds;
  • When choosing nuts with shells, you should pay attention to ensure that they are not cracked.

All these indicators are evidence that almonds can be in suitable condition for a long time.

Shelf life of almonds

Almonds can be preserved most of all when frozen (more than a year). For a little less than 12 months, nuts can be stored in a refrigerator on a fruit rack.

Almonds do not like sudden temperature changes. It also cannot be re-frozen. At room temperature, the shelf life of almonds is only a few months. But if the room is light and warm, then it is even smaller.

Almonds can be stored in a vacuum container for up to six months. But at the same time, do not forget about the recommendations from the manufacturer, which are always on the packaging.

An open bag of nuts must be stored in the right conditions: temperature – +16°С -+18°С; humidity – up to 75%. Such indicators are needed for storing almonds in any form.

Rules for storing almonds in shell

Buying nuts unshelled is a more practical approach. In this state, they are less susceptible to environmental influences, which helps them stay fresh longer.

If the temperature and humidity in the area where almonds are stored is too high, the product may taste rancid and may develop mold. Therefore, it is good if it is possible to store almonds in a cool place with moderate humidity.

There should always be good ventilation in a box of almonds. It should not be tightly closed, otherwise a musty smell and mold will appear. You can also store shelled almonds in a glass container that is not hermetically sealed.

You need to place the container with nuts in a place where bright light does not reach. Almonds, even in the shell, dislike the sun's rays catastrophically.

Unshelled nuts can be stored for a year under the right conditions. After this period, the quality of the almonds can no longer be called good and the taste pleasant.

Rules for storing almonds without shells

You can buy peeled almonds raw or roasted.For long-term storage, it is better to choose a product that has been heat-treated at high temperatures.

You need to store nuts without shells in a cool place. It could be:

  • storage room;
  • a kitchen shelf that can be locked in the lower tier of the cabinet;
  • in a closet on a glazed balcony (if it’s winter outside).

The safest way to store almonds is in a special vacuum container. But you can also place the nuts in a glass jar that closes tightly.

At room temperature, in a closed plastic bag, you won’t be able to preserve almonds for long. After some time, the nuts will become bitter and lose some of their beneficial qualities.

At low thermometer readings, peeled almonds will be suitable for consumption for up to six months. Nuts can also be stored frozen in a closed bag. In the freezer, almonds will be tasty and healthy for a whole year.
