How to properly store chestnuts for the winter
Typically, consumers enjoy the original taste of edible chestnuts in the winter, although the time of their collection occurs in the fall. The thing is that storing this product is not at all difficult.
Taking into account all the advice from experienced housewives, everyone will be able to properly preserve unusual nuts and surprise their relatives with a chestnut dish on winter days.
Is it possible to store chestnuts fresh?
Chestnut nuts cannot be stored fresh for a long time. They will develop mold very quickly (in just a couple of days). Especially if the chestnuts are packed in a plastic bag and just stand on the kitchen table, where, naturally, it is at room temperature.
Immediately after harvesting, chestnuts must be taken to a cool, dark place. In the shell they can stay fresh for about 1 week. The chestnut harvest can be covered with sand or dry chestnut leaves and taken to the cellar, the temperature of which should be from +2 °C to +5 °C. Under such conditions, they will be suitable for consumption for several months (up to six months).
Storing chestnuts in the refrigerator or freezer
The natural composition of chestnuts contains a large amount of water. Therefore, it is best to store them in the refrigerator, under the right conditions (0 ° C to 1 ° C), they can remain fresh for 2 months. It should be remembered that the lower shelves are always colder than the upper ones, so chestnuts will naturally be stored longer at the bottom of the refrigeration unit.
Before sending them to the refrigerator, chestnuts must be placed in a plastic bag, after which several holes must be made in the package for air ventilation.
If chestnut fruits are placed in the freezer, they will be suitable for consumption for six months. It is worth considering that it is better to cook, fry or bake them before freezing. This will extend the shelf life. It is best to pack (to preserve the product in the freezer) in vacuum bags or foil.
