Taking into account certain needs, the moss is stored in dried form for some time, in the conditions necessary for this, or the forest plant is added to indoor flowers (to normalize hydration and disinfection) by watering it from time to time, or it is grown in special “home” terrariums.

Preparing sphagnum moss for storage - drying

Having decided to stock up on dried sphagnum moss, you must first, immediately after collecting it, dry it properly. First, squeeze out excess moisture with your hands, and then place the prepared material in a place that is well ventilated. Sphagnum moss has an original ability: its unique qualities are not lost under the influence of direct sunlight.

The drying process will take quite a long period of time. But what is also important here is the fact for what it is planned to be used in the future. For example, for use in medicine, moss must be completely dried. It should crunch and break. But flower growers leave the shoots a little longer, and they need a little moist moss.

What is the best way to store dry sphagnum moss for flowers?

It is not recommended to store sphagnum moss in the refrigerator.Due to the lack of lighting in this device, it will rot and become unusable.

An ordinary transparent plastic bag can also be used as packaging. Accordingly, as needed, the moss is taken out of the bag and soaked in water for 5 minutes (to become saturated with moisture). It is important to remember that dried sphagnum cannot come to life.

For ventilation, it is better to make holes in the bag and not compact the moss tightly. More details in the video:

How to store live sphagnum moss

Live sphagnum moss should be tightly wrapped in a bag and placed in the freezer. It is better to divide it into “approximate portions” so as not to periodically unpack the entire package. Freezer conditions for sphagnum moss are considered the most optimal, since in the natural environment it survives well even in very cold winters.
