How to properly store daffodils in winter - storing bulbs at home
Narcissus does not please the eye for a very long time, but the pleasant fact is that it can be restored next season. To do this, you need to know the basic rules and methods of storing daffodils during the winter.
Flower growers offer different options for saving daffodils until next spring. Some people prefer to leave them in the flower bed, but most experts in this matter are sure that it is better to dig up the plant’s bulbs and preserve them in this way until the planting season.
How to properly prepare daffodils before storing them
Proper preparation ensures proper conservation of daffodil bulbs. The most important point is thorough drying. Daffodil bulbs should be left outdoors for a week. This time is enough for a dense film, the so-called protection, to appear on the planting material.
Those bulbs that have grown together tightly must be separated. Small specimens should not be touched. These are “babies” who will not survive the winter without their “mother.” The next necessary point is sorting. You need to store only healthy, dense and strong tubers, without signs of disease or insect damage. Unsuitable bulbs should be discarded, preferably burned.
Daffodil planting material provides an environment in which insects like to breed. In order to get rid of pests, the bulbs should be dipped in hot water (45 ° C) for several hours and then dried.
Storing daffodil bulbs at home
After proper preparation, the daffodil seed can be sent for storage to a place where it is cool, well ventilated and has an air temperature no higher than +20 °C.
There are several successful and gardener-tested ways to store daffodils in winter.
- The most common container for storing daffodil tubers is wooden boxes. You can place the bulbs layer by layer, but each ball should be “separated” by thick sheets of newspaper.
- Planting material for a delicate flower can be stored in a suspended state by placing it in a homemade nylon, tulle or canvas bag.
- When the number of bulbs is small, they can be planted in a flower pot and placed in a cool place.
- The balcony is also considered a good place to store daffodils in winter, but only if it is heated.
- There is a misconception that plant bulbs can be stored in the refrigerator. This is wrong. Daffodil tubers have the ability to quickly accumulate moisture, and this can cause them to get sick.
