How to properly store jam for the winter
When stocking up on jam for the winter, every housewife should know how best to store such a preparation so that it lasts in a suitable form not only until spring, but also until the new harvest.
Just a few important tips from experts in this matter will help you easily cope with the task of saving jam at home.
How long can jam be stored?
Before preparing a sweet preparation, you must carefully wash the berries and fruits, as harmful bacteria will help the product to deteriorate faster. If you follow all the rules during cooking, and then seal the product correctly, then it can be suitable for consumption for several years. You should also remember that not very sweet jam can be stored for up to 6 months and no longer. The most correct ratio of sugar and berries (in kilograms), which extends the shelf life of the product, is considered to be: one to one.
Important nuances when storing jam
A mold film will not form on the surface of the jam, if several recommendations are considered important.
- Ready-made sweets for the winter should be placed in thermally disinfected jars only when hot. Containers can be closed not only with metal, but also with screw or plastic lids.
- Experienced housewives, before rolling up the jam, wait for a “protective film” to form on its surface. It will be “more reliable” if the finished delicacy is briefly placed in the oven at a low temperature. When the jam has cooled a little, you can roll it up. This procedure can extend the shelf life of the sweet.
- Containers with jam should be stored in a dark room with good air circulation. The delicacy does not like sudden changes in temperature. Some housewives store jam in apartment conditions, away from heat sources. But the best place for this is a basement or cellar, a storage room or a glazed balcony.
- If there is little granulated sugar in the jam, then it is best to keep it in a refrigerator and eat it first. This delicacy can also be stored in the freezer, placed in a plastic tray. After thawing, frozen jam should be boiled again, otherwise it will have a watery consistency.
Opened jam cannot be stored for a long time; in a few days it will become moldy. To “save” a delicacy that is about to spoil, it can be used as a filling for various baked goods.
