How to properly store alcohol at home
Ethyl alcohol is widely used not only for medical purposes, but it is also used as an antiseptic. Many other industries cannot do without it either. Despite the fact that most people use alcohol at home, not everyone knows how to store it properly.
In order to keep alcohol at home in a suitable condition, it is important to follow just a few recommendations from experts.
Proper storage of alcohol at home
Medical (ethyl) alcohol must be stored in a hermetically sealed glass container. The air in the container should occupy at least a quarter of the volume of the bottle.
The optimal temperature for storing alcohol is the thermometer readings from +5 °C to +20 °C. The container with the substance should be placed in a place where it is dark and in which the humidity is about 85%.
Direct exposure to sunlight can cause “chemical changes” in alcohol. Under no circumstances should a container of alcohol be kept near a heat source, because it is a flammable substance and can ignite.
It is strictly forbidden to use alcohol that has sediment at the bottom. The chemical composition of such a product has already been changed for one reason or another.
Terms and containers for storing alcohol
Many experts are confident that ethyl alcohol can be stored for no more than 3 years.During this time, it is suitable as a disinfectant or for preparing rubs, tinctures, and other things. Provided that all recommendations for storing the substance are correctly followed, it can be used from 3 to 10 years. There is pharmaceutical alcohol, the packaging of which indicates an expiration date of 2 years. It all depends on the manufacturer, container, and storage conditions. An uncorked bottle of alcohol should not be stored for longer than 3 months. In this state it cannot be of high quality for a long time.
If you store alcohol in an inappropriate container, it will turn into a toxic product hazardous to health. The best option is a tightly screwed glass container. Metal and plastic packaging are the subject of debate among many experts. Most believe that exposure to alcohol with such material, especially poor quality, can eventually lead to toxicity of the substance.
