Choosing the right marshmallow is the key to successful storage

Everyone knows that real marshmallows are made from applesauce and pectin (or agar). It is very difficult to find one in modern stores, and in some regions it is even impossible. Natural marshmallows without dyes should be white. Sometimes it has a yellowish tint because egg powder was used in its preparation. This sweetness can also have a grayish tint, which indicates the presence of frozen protein in the recipe. You cannot believe that, for example, red marshmallows have this color because of the fruit filling. It is not true. All colored marshmallows contain dyes.

When choosing a treat, you need to take a close look at its appearance. It should have clear ribbed sides and a smooth surface (cracks indicate that the product is not fresh). When you gently press fresh marshmallows, you feel soft and elastic. If the sweetness lasts, then there is very little time left for the expiration date.

To store sweet treats, a dark, dry place with a room temperature of +18 C° to +25 C° (for example, a kitchen cabinet) is suitable. It could also be the refrigerator door (it’s warmer there than on the shelves). Under such conditions, marshmallows will be usable for more than 1 month.

It should be remembered that broken marshmallows spoil faster. In this state, it soon loses moisture. Such marshmallows can be stored for no more than 5 days at temperatures from +3 °C to +5 °C.

A closed container with purchased marshmallows is stored for about 9 months, taking into account that all necessary conditions are met.

Storing homemade marshmallows

Many housewives have gotten used to making marshmallows themselves. For proper storage of sweets, it is important what it is made from: based on agar and applesauce or powdered sugar. The dessert should be stored in a container that can be tightly covered with cling film in the refrigerator. Room temperature is not suitable in this case, because homemade marshmallows are so-called airy jelly, and they should not be stored in such conditions, otherwise they will quickly deteriorate.
