How to properly dry roses at home: dried flowers and petals

Methods for drying flowers

On air

In order to dry roses in this way, you will need a dark room (closet, closet or attic) and a rope. A thick thread is tied to the stem of the flower. A small loop is made at the other end of the rope. This loop can be placed on a long nail driven into the wall. In this case, the flower itself should be turned upside down with its bud.

If there are a lot of roses, then the rope is pulled between opposite walls. A thin rubber band is wound onto each stem, onto which a paper clip is then placed. With this clip the flowers will be attached to the rope.

This drying method will take approximately 10 – 14 days. The downside is that roses may turn black and lose color after this procedure.

In sand

For this method you will need river sand. It is thoroughly washed and, when dried, sifted through a fine sieve. If finding natural sand is problematic, you can use quartz. It is purchased at a pet store, since its scope of application is bathing fur-bearing chinchillas.

The drying procedure itself is quite simple. The stem of the flowers is cut off so that the rose fits completely into the box. A layer of sand from 3 to 5 centimeters is poured into the container. The flowers are placed in the sand so that they stand strictly horizontally. Next, they begin to carefully cover the buds on all sides with a thin stream of sand. This must be done as carefully as possible so that the outer petals do not fall off.

Once the container is completely filled, close it with a lid and put it in a dry place for 3 weeks. After the specified period, a small hole is made in the bottom of the box and all the sand is poured out. Flowers dried in sand will retain their shape and bright color.

Using silica gel

Silica gel is a powder that can easily absorb moisture. This method is more often used by professional florists, since violation of the technology can lead to damage to the flower.

The technology is as follows. At the preparatory stage, the stem is cut from the flower and the bud is placed on a wire. A stable structure is formed from wire. A couple of centimeters of desiccant are poured into a small container and a rosebud is inserted into it. Next, the process is similar to drying in sand: the flower is sprinkled with silica gel, after which the container is tightly closed with a lid.After five days the rose will be completely dry.

Using semolina

The technology for drying using semolina is no different from previous recipes with sprinkling the bud with desiccants. Semolina is also a good absorbent, so drying it in it makes sense.

Using cotton wool

Pieces of cotton wool also perfectly absorb moisture, so you can use it to dry flowers. All the petals of the plant are carefully covered with small pieces of this material so that they are all separated. Next, hang the structure upside down in a dark place and wait for it to dry completely. The cotton wool is removed from a dry bud with tweezers, being careful not to damage the fragile petals. Drying this way takes a week.

In the book

In order to make flat-shaped flowers, a book is perfect, in the very middle of which the roses are placed. In order for this method to work, oppression is needed. Moreover, the larger the rosebud, the heavier the load should be. We press our herbarium with a heavy object and forget about it for two weeks. To prevent the pages of the book from getting dirty with the juice of the flower, the bud should be wrapped in a paper napkin.

How to dry rose petals

Dry rose petals are an excellent material for decoration, as well as one of the components in cooking and cosmetology. Dried rose petals are sprinkled on the newlyweds at the wedding ceremony.

Individual parts of the bud can be dried in bulk on pallets in a dark, ventilated area. If you want to dry the petals so that they are perfectly flat, you can use the method of drying flowers in a book. In this case, the product will be completely ready in 5 – 7 days.
