How to preserve chrysanthemums in winter
Many inexperienced flower growers are intimidated by the process of storing chrysanthemums in the winter. Yes, the flower is delicate, moreover, it is southern and loves warmth very much. But if you do not neglect important tips for storing this decorative beauty, in the spring the chrysanthemum will definitely delight you with lush blooms.
It is very important, before sending the bushes for winter rest, to provide them with proper care and ensure that they receive all the necessary nutrition. Then it will be easier for the chrysanthemum to cope with the cold.

Ways to store chrysanthemums indoors in winter
When choosing one of the options for saving a flower until spring, you need to focus on the climate of a particular region.
In the basement or cellar
Before placing chrysanthemums in such a room, you should take the preparatory processes preceding storage responsibly. Success in this matter depends on this.
Flowers should be dug up at the end of November. The soil from the rhizome should not be shaken off too much. After this, the chrysanthemum should stand in the open air for several days. During this time it will dry out a little. If there are insects on the chrysanthemum, the bushes need to be sprayed with insecticides. Only after this can the bushes be sent for storage.
The room must also meet several requirements:
- have a constant temperature (from 0 to +4°C);
- sufficiently high humidity;
- good ventilation;
- the presence of fungus, mold and pests is out of the question.
You can put chrysanthemum bushes directly on the floor or in special boxes, the bottom of which must be filled with soil (5-7 cm). They should be placed close to each other. The top of the plants should be sprinkled with substrate.
The temperature regime must be observed very precisely to prevent, for example, premature blossoming of shoots. If hypothermia occurs, flowers may freeze.
Once a month it is necessary to inspect the chrysanthemums; if they look lethargic, they need to be sprinkled with water. If bushes with mold are identified, they should be thrown away, and those that remain should be treated with an anti-fungal preparation.
In the greenhouse
A greenhouse is a very convenient place to store chrysanthemums until spring. The plant must be replanted into it during the flowering period. With the onset of the first frosty days, the stems of chrysanthemums should be cut off almost completely, leaving 2-3 cm. After this, each bush should be sprinkled with humus.
To insulate the flowers, they must be covered with a ball of absolutely dry soil (20-25 cm). Then cover with any covering material (3-4 layers). The temperature in the greenhouse should be from 0°C to +5°C
The most important thing is not to forget to open chrysanthemums in a timely manner, due to the fact that the flowers often rot rather than freeze.
Ways to store chrysanthemums outdoors in winter
In the open ground
You don’t have to dig up chrysanthemum bushes for the winter, but leave them in the garden bed where they grew. But this method is only suitable for those who have warm winters. If you decide to leave the chrysanthemum outside for the winter, then it must be carefully hilled up on all sides. Small depressions near the bushes will allow water to stagnate; this should not be allowed.
With the onset of constant frost, the plants must be covered with dry leaves or coniferous spruce branches, and then “wrapped” with polyethylene or a special cloth. It is very good if it is possible to “hide” the chrysanthemum under a wooden box; thanks to the air gap, the flower will be able to “breathe”.
This method also has a disadvantage - it is impossible to control how the plant feels.
In the trenches
Some gardeners living in warm regions store chrysanthemums in trenches. The place under the trench (depth 0.5-1 m) should not be wet. Flowers are stored better in a narrow hole.
Having placed the chrysanthemums tightly in the recess (in 2 layers, if there are a lot of them), they should be sprinkled to the top with a very loose substrate, dry leaves or sawdust. Then cover with spruce branches, then with boards or slate, and then reinforce with plastic film along the entire width of the trench (so that the wind does not blow it away). It is better to cover the top with leaves, pine needles or garden soil.
Storing chrysanthemums in winter is a very important moment that needs to be taken very seriously. Because it is very difficult for them to survive the winter without proper conditions. Experienced gardeners advise using several methods simultaneously to increase the chances of enjoying chrysanthemum blooms in the future.
