Collecting and drying burdock root at home
Burdock is considered one of the most useful weeds. Its leaves are widely used in cooking and medicine. However, burdock roots have the most miraculous qualities. In cosmetology and medicine there are many recipes for using this magical root.
Harvesting burdock root
Burdock seems simple in appearance, but harvesting burdock root requires some knowledge. It is necessary to correctly determine the age of the plant, and the harvesting time depends on this. Burdock blooms in the second year, and therefore, with such a plant you do not need to wait for autumn, and you need to dig it up in May. If you delay it until autumn, then such a root will no longer be good for anything.
Annual burdock is dug up in the fall, before the leaves begin to wilt.
The burdock root is tap-shaped and can reach 1 meter in length, so when digging, arm yourself with a shovel and patience.
You need to dig up the roots in dry weather, a few days after the rain. The root should be cleared of soil and small roots. It is not recommended to wash it, as this may damage the root. But if it is too dirty, then it is better to take a chance and then slightly increase the drying time.
Drying burdock root
Burdock is unpretentious in drying, and you can dry it in any way convenient for you. Cut it into small pieces and place it on nets to dry in the fresh air.
You can use an electric vegetable dryer or a gas oven.
Set the temperature in the electric dryer to +60 degrees, and then drying will take you no more than 8 hours.
In the oven, adjust the temperature to +90 degrees, and with the door slightly open, dry the roots for 4-5 hours.
Monitor the drying process and turn the roots over from time to time for more even drying.
