Homemade lime syrup for cocktails: how to make it yourself
Many cocktails include lime syrup and only lime, not lemon, although the two fruits are very close. Lime has the same acidity as lemon, the same taste and aroma, but lime is somewhat bitter. Some people appreciate this bitterness and prefer to add lime syrup to their cocktail.
Lime syrup is prepared in the same way as lemon syrup.
For 1 kg of lime we need:
- 1 kg sugar;
- 1 glass of water.
Wash the lime fruits thoroughly with hot water, or better yet, put them in a colander and pour boiling water over them and wipe dry with a towel. For longer storage, they are sometimes covered with a thin layer of paraffin, and these particles can get into the syrup.
Squeeze the juice from the limes. You can do this in any way that is familiar to you - the main thing for us is the result.
Pour the resulting juice into a saucepan, add a glass of water, add all the sugar and cook until the syrup becomes syrup-like.
Just keep in mind that as it cools, it will become somewhat thicker, so it’s better not to overcook it.
You can add spices, but this is optional. Cinnamon or mint goes well with lime.
Pour the hot syrup into bottles with stoppers. You can use beautiful bottles that you have left over from purchased alcoholic beverages.
Lime syrup should be stored in a cool place and can be used for up to 1 year.
